| Little Priest Tribal College is located on the Winnebago Reservation in northeastern Nebraska. Also known as the Ho-Chunk people of Nebraska, the Winnebago Tribe chartered Little Priest Tribal College in 1996 to provide students with the opportunity to improve their knowledge of Ho-Chunk language and culture. By starting their own college, tribal leaders hoped to develop an institution that fully reflects the culture of the tribe and responds to the needs of the community. The College provides two-year associate's degrees and prepares students to transfer to and successfully complete a major at a four-year institution.
The Tribal Colleges and Universities Program grant will help Little Priest Tribal College enhance its facilities. Priorities for the project were established through community surveys and focus groups. They include acquiring equipment for the Tribal Museum and the Tribal Language Program, both to be housed in a new Cultural Learning Center; purchasing furniture, equipment, and security services for a new college/community library being built on the campus and establishing a Technology Center in the library; and constructing a new parking lot and fencing.
The College is located in a rural area with few local services and few places where residents can go to find information on topics of interest to them. The enhancement of the campus's facilities will provide a much needed resource and outlet for community members and students alike. Little Priest Tribal College's partners in the Cultural Learning Center and Library projects include the Winnebago Tribe, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the American Indian College Fund.
