Overview
Taft College, a California community college located in the City of Taft, will establish a state-of-the-art community resource and learning center on its campus to provide increased instructional services and access to computer technology, and to develop strong linkages with community resources to meet the needs of traditionally underserved individuals. Targeted populations will include monolingual (Spanish) and limited-English speaking individuals, out-of-school youths ages 16-22, and other low- and moderate-income persons.

The program goals are to expand and enhance the college's ability to offer nontraditional services to members of the targeted populations and to assist them with the following:

  • Prepare for the General Educational Development (GED) examination in English and in Spanish.
  • Increase proficiency in the English language.
  • Pursue educational or vocational opportunities at a post-secondary level.
  • Achieve basic computer literacy to bridge the digital divide.
  • Increase and build their self-esteem.
  • Increase familiarity with and awareness of the various community- and faith-based organizations and other resources that are available to address housing, employment, legal, parenting, and other concerns which may be impacting their ability to lead happy, healthy, and productive lives.
