Overview
The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio will use a $399,000 Community Outreach Partnership Centers (COPC) grant to assist the South Texas Addiction, Research, and Technology (START) Center. This new COPC will carry out outreach and applied research activities to address the urban problems of the San Antonio Empowerment Zone.

The goals of the program are to establish a COPC that is available and accessible to faith-based and community-based organizations, to utilize the COPC to build the capacity and skills of residents, and to utilize the COPC to expand the health and human service infrastructure and strengthen the economic infrastructure of the Empowerment Zone (EZ).

The substance abuse-related problems within the EZ of San Antonio have had a significant negative impact on the overall health and safety of the residents in the area. This alliance will bridge the gap between research and practice to provide comprehensive community and research driven strategies.
