Overview
The San Diego Community College (SDCC) District will receive a Community Outreach Partnership Centers grant of $400,000 to address needs identified in the Consolidated Plan, focusing on four low-income, high-crime areas of south central San Diego, all within or adjacent to the federally designated City of San Diego Renewal Community. In partnership with the San Diego Housing Commission and participating community-based organizations--Comprehensive Training Systems, Neighborhood House, Occupational Training Services, The Fair Housing Council of San Diego, and the San Diego Home Loan Counseling Service--SDCC will undertake activities in the following areas:

  • Job Training and Education: Low-income residents of south central San Diego will be assisted through a comprehensive offering of community outreach and recruitment activities, career assessment, educational evaluation and occupation exploration classes, remedial instruction, job readiness training, job placement and retention support, and assistance in securing advancement opportunities.
  • Crime Prevention and Education: Each year, 120 youths from the target area will participate in afterschool activity programs, which will include tutoring assistance for elementary, middle, and high school students, provided by college interns.
  • Fair and Affordable Housing: Residents from the target community will be informed about fair housing issues and laws and their access to assistance and resources increased. Activities will include classes, presentations, and focus groups that will include the design, production, presentation, and dissemination of culturally and linguistically appropriate information related to fair and affordable housing.
