The University of Michigan at Dearborn will receive a Community Outreach Partnership Centers (COPC) New Grant of $399,814 to address a variety of issues in two target neighborhoods in southwest Detroit. In meetings and consultations with its partner organizations--the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor School of Social Work, Madonna University, the Springwells Village Collaborative, and the Alliance to Revitalize the Community around Harms (ARCH)--five areas of need were identified, around which the following activities will be undertaken:The environment: The center will be conducting environmental studies of air quality, brownfields, and noise pollution. Workshops, enrichment programs, and clean-up activities will be held.
- Safety and security: To improve safety and security, there will be community organization activities and the formation of block watch groups, and conflict resolution workshops will be offered.
- Education: Educational enhancement will include educational enrichment programs, college mentoring for middle school students, and vocational training.
- Internet access: Accessibility to the internet will be increased through computer classes at various sites, along with asset mapping and the development of a community database.
- Diversity/fairness issues: The COPC will conduct citizen education workshops, assist residents with naturalization, provide translators in a variety of locations, and conduct workshops concerning the rights and responsibilities of tenants and property owners.
