Overview
Kuskokwim Campus (KuC) is an extended campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks that was established in 1972. It is responsible for providing post-secondary education to a 75,000-square-mile region in rural southwest Alaska. The university’s student population represents 56 Alaska Native villages in the Yukon and Delta regions. The campus’s courses are delivered by local instruction, village courses, audio conference, Web-based instruction, videoconference, and itinerant and correspondence study. KuC’s mission is to prepare students to be professional, community, and cultural leaders. KuC proposes to assist communities by providing the following microenterprise opportunities: Native arts/crafts production and marketing; Native dance performance and marketing; village B&Bs; management/coordination; tourism; and driver’s education as a business opportunity. These activities will help to alleviate some of the high unemployment by providing the training needed to establish and run a small business in a small rural village. This project is a collaborative effort with a variety of regional partners.
