Overview

FY10 ROUND 2 GRANT, AWARDED SEPTEMBER 2011.

The University of Alaska, Fairbanks–Kuskokwim Campus intends to use its Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Institutions Assisting Communities (AN/NHIAC) grant to fund the activities proposed for their “Partners in Growth” project. The proposed project is a collaborative venture among the university, Yupiit Piciryarait Cultural Center (YPCC), Alaska State Council on the Arts (ASCA), Bethel Community Services Foundation (BCSF), Alaska Small Business Development Center (SBDC), and at least six villages located in Southwest Alaska, and will target low-income local residents from the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta region (YK Delta). The primary goal of the project is to extend the highly successful Bethel Saturday Market into at least six villages in the YK Delta. Workshops will be held in small business planning, computer training, and promoting excellence in manufacturing traditional and nontraditional Native crafts. YPCC and Kuskokwim Campus will offer workshops in entrepreneurship, being your own boss, marketing Native crafts, local manufacturing, computer skills, and how to energize local economy with a public market. The ASCA will partner with the university to develop Native Arts marketing and related industries. The SBDC will assist Kuskokwim Campus to promote small business outreach between rural and urban customers. The anticipated outcomes will significantly increased financial income for public market vendors in job creation, sales, and expansion opportunities that will help to develop economical stability for involved communities.
