Overview
The Northwest Campus (NC) located in Nome, Alaska, is an extended campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It is a nonresidential 4-year public institution that serves 16 Alaska Native villages that span a 36,000-square-mile region. NC proposes to rehabilitate a facility that provides mechanical, welding, and carpentry vocational workshops. These workshops will be available to both students and adults. Students in grades 9 through 12 will participate during the school year, and adults will participate in the evening and on weekends. Students will have an opportunity to take a combination of vocational and life-skill classes that will provide knowledge and skills to increase employment and small-business opportunities. Adults will have an opportunity to increase their skill levels in vocational trades. This program proposes to address the lack of vocational training available in the region. In the past, high school-age children had to move or attend a boarding school hundreds or even thousands of miles away to obtain this type of training. NC will work closely with the Northwest Alaska Career and Technical Center and the City of Nome.
