Overview
Salish Kootenai College (SKC) is the tribal college of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Indian Reservation in Northwest Montana. The college was created in 1976 to meet the higher education needs of Indian students (78 percent of the college’s population). SKC is a leader in tribal education. The college offers 4 bachelor’s degrees, 16 associate’s degrees, and 7 vocational certification programs of studies. SKC is the first tribal college in the Northwest to receive regional accreditation. SKC’s project will use the talent and experience of the building trades faculty and students to construct a health fitness center to serve the needs of the campus and community. The center will provide services such as dietary information and referrals to reduce the incidence and effects of diabetes and obesity; and a kiosk and computer with Internet/Web access that will offer participants information on housing, health, social, employment, and higher education opportunities.
