| Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) established the Simon Green Aikens Community Development Corporation (SGACDC) in 1998 to work in partnership with the City of Winston-Salem Housing and Neighborhood Development, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, the Winston-Salem Black Chamber of Commerce, the Center for Community Safety, and others. With this link between the SGACDC and community agencies, WSSU will use its $550,000 HBCU grant to expand its role and effectiveness in addressing community development needs and revitalizing neighborhoods along the Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive Corridor. The target area surrounds the WSSU campus and contains U.S. census tracts 8.01, 8.02, and 7. This area is near the central business district and is the most distressed area in Winston-Salem. It has been identified in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Consolidated Housing and Community Development Plan (2004-2008) as an area that has critical needs in housing rehabilitation, homeownership, and business development. Moreover, research of the Forsyth County Health Department Surveillance Unit identifies the area as one that needs increased awareness of preventative health care and increased access to health care services while the U.S. 2000 Census Bureau shows a high educational attainment gap and income gap between the target area and other areas of the City.
