Overview
The University of Hawaii–Kapi'olani Community College intends to use its Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Institutions Assisting Communities (AN/NHIAC) grant to renovate existing space to create the Ohana Learning Center (OLC) at Palolo Homes, which is comprised of 306 public housing units with 1,087 low- to very-low-income residents; and to integrate more centralized, structured, and comprehensive programs and services delivered by the faculty, staff, and students of Kapiolani Community College. The renovated OLC will house six specific programs and services for residents of all ages: early literacy tutoring and mentoring; homework assistance and computer and Internet training; computer, Internet, microenterprise business development training, business center services, college transition, financial aid and program advising, scholarship programs, and career pathways in science, technology, engineering, education, health, hospitality and culinary, and business; improved public health services and health promotion and disease prevention workshops; active aging programs and home healthcare, financial literacy, and security workshops; participatory community research training for improved data collection and community-driven strategic planning for quality of life improvement.
