Overview
Albany State University, located in the distressed area of East Central Albany, Georgia, intends to use its Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) grant to increase its role and effectiveness in addressing accessibility to quality housing and community development in the designated “Neighborhood Strategy Area” of East Central Albany. The university proposes the mobilization of its resources combined with the resources of partners to: support access for low- and moderate-income families to quality housing; promote and support business development; and, provide job readiness and skill training to low-moderate income residents of the target area. The principle objectives are to: 1) provide site work and public improvements necessary for the construction of five new homes; 2) raise the “Financial Literacy of 60 individuals to qualifying level for home purchase; 3) increase the employability of 150 individuals through job readiness and skill training that results in the placement of 50 percent; 4) support the establishment and maintenance of micro-businesses in the target area through the establishment of a Business Start-up and Growth Resource Center; and 5) provide financial assistance in support of establishing the maintenance and growth of small minority enterprises through the establishment of a revolving loan fund.
