Overview
The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) with involvement of a variety of other community and university partners, will use its Community Outreach Partnership Centers (COPC) New Grant to focus on the following urban needs and corresponding activities:

  • Capacity building for community-university partnerships to eliminate health disparities. Striking health disparities exist between the target communities and the rest of San Francisco. Activity 1 will be collaboration, coordination, and capacity building for community-university partnerships at the university and in the targeted communities and to eliminate health disparities.
  • Reduce joblessness. High rates of poverty, under-employment and unemployment, and inadequate capacity in existing job training and job placement programs undermine health and well-being in target communities. UCSF will address this through community outreach worker job training and placement.
  • Reduce violence and its effects. High rates of violence and ensuing mental and physical health problems inspire the campus-community team to undertake The Resiliency Project. This will consist of using an adapted Study Circles model to engage CPRC Community Council members, local violence and mental health experts, and grassroots community residents in designing and implementing culturally appropriate community-based interventions to promote individual and community resiliency.

The target neighborhoods for this grant are Bayview Hunters Point (BVHP), the Mission District, and Visitacion Valley.
