Overview
Coppin State University intends to use its Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) grant to provide economic assistance to its Coppin Heights Community Development Corporation (CHCDC) to carry out neighborhood revitalization in Greater Coppin Heights/Rosemont and to further strengthen its relationship, involvement, and effectiveness in addressing community needs. Under the proposed project, CHCDC activities will include: developing three new homes for first-time, low-income homebuyers; providing direct economic assistance for home (façade) improvements to 14 low- to moderate-income owners of occupied properties adjacent to the proposed new homes, to ensure that current residents’ properties are made aesthetically comparable to the newly developed homes; providing financial literacy education and training to low-income residents ages 16 and older and hosting an annual financial literacy fair; and organizing and educating new community leaders and increasing the capacity of the Greater Coppin Heights/Rosemont Steering Committee, a resident-led community advocacy group specifically focused on addressing resident-identified priorities.
