Overview

FY10 ROUND 2 GRANT, AWARDED SEPTEMBER 2011.

Hawaii Pacific University intends to use its Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Institutions Assisting Communities (AN/NHIAC) grant to develop and implement an afterschool, literacy, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and job/employment training project for Section 3 resident children (grades 2–8) and their families. The primary objective of the Na Hokulele Project (NHP) is to increase project participants’ interest and knowledge of STEM, higher education, and related job opportunities. The proposed NHP will be implemented in the community hall of a local church in the Kalihi-Palama area. Participants, many of whom are recent Micronesian immigrants and low-income, low-skilled workers in the Kalihi-Palama region, are also at high risk for poverty, crime, violence, and school failure. Because health, family involvement, and academic achievement are crucial for STEM education, NHP proposes the following key activities to promote academic achievement, higher education, and/or job/employment training opportunities: direct instruction (literacy, STEM, computer skills, filmmaking); mentors (HPU College of Natural and Computational Sciences STEM students); onsite, daily literacy tutoring; field trips for children and parents to HPU campus and scientific institutes; community engagement (for example, parent/community engagement night workshops); and an NHP website for professional development, project replication, expansion, and sustainability.
