Year: 1997

Overview
Buffalo State College will receive $391,596 to establish a Community Outreach Partnership Center in Buffalo's Enterprise Community. The project will concentrate on census tracts that are among the poorest in New York, in a city that ranks fifth in the nation in overall poverty rates.

The project, which will operate under the college's "Resurgent City Center," will undertake activities including:

  • Developing a degree and certificate program in community economic development both for and in the community.
  • Helping to establish new small- and medium-sized cooperative businesses and sustaining existing small businesses.
  • Creating a financial structure to expand and recycle community financial resources.
  • Providing training to neighborhood groups on establishing cooperative housing ventures.

The City of Buffalo, Tops Inc., the area's largest supermarket chain, other businesses, and foundations have all provided matching funding to the project.
