| Clemson University will receive $399,686 to establish a Community Outreach Partnership Centers (COPC) program in the West Greenville community of Greenville, South Carolina. West Greenville is a community characterized by high rates of poverty and the COPC activities are designed to address some of the major needs of the community.
Specific activities to be undertaken include: - Developing a rehabilitation training program to improve housing quality, employ neighborhood residents, and provide homeownership opportunities.
- Conducting workshops, especially for public housing residents on starting small businesses so they can take advantage of the local housing authority's start-up capital loan program.
- Offering leadership training sessions to neighborhood associations.
- Studying the possibility of establishing a private transportation company to address how the residents can be transported to areas outside the neighborhood for employment.
The City of Greenville; the Westview Homes Association, based in the Westview Homes public housing development; and SHARE, one of the major nonprofit organizations in the region, will be the university's partners in implementing the COPC.
