| DePaul University will be working with the West Humboldt Park neighborhood in Chicago to undertake a program of youth development, housing and quality of life improvement, and economic development of a business and commercial district. The population of the neighborhood is evenly divided between Latinos and African Americans. Part of the neighborhood is in the City's Empowerment Zone.
Activities to be undertaken include: provision of an intervention program for at-risk youth; expansion of McPREP, a summer academic support program, for inner city young people; work with the local Neighborhood Housing Services Corporation to develop a model homeownership and cooperative training program targeted to families with income under $19,000; creation of a "one-stop shopping" Career and Learning Project to link the development of learning plans to career strategies; and implementation of several quality-of-life projects that will require the building of new relationships with four city departments -- the Police Department, the Department of Streets and Sanitation, the Park District, and the Public Library. In addition, the university will establish a small fund to enable research determined by the community to be conducted by a local community organization.
DePaul University has been awarded $500,000 for its Community Outreach Partnership Center.
