| East Tennessee State University will receive a Community Outreach Partnership Centers (COPC) grant of $399,999 to open a COPCat the newly renovated Keystone School in the Downtown Neighborhood of Johnson City. The neighborhood has both very high concentrations of poverty and high levels of unemployment.
Activities to be offered at the center include: - Gathering information on the overall health needs of the neighborhood in order to provide better services tailored to their needs.
- Opening a dental clinic, staffed by the university dental hygienist students and local dentist who volunteer their time.
- Offering job search and locator skills, along with adult education and computer learning.
- Providing a microlending/enterprise program for neighborhood residents.
The city will be contributing substantial matching funds to the project and will be an active partner in its implementation.
