Overview
Located outside of Washington, D.C., George Mason University serves a population that is marked by contrast. On the one hand, its proximity to the Nation's capital allows the University to build on the strengths of the Federal government and Congress in its efforts to help local residents. Nevertheless, nestled in the midst of all of this power and prosperity are impoverished neighborhoods, such as Columbia Heights West, Douglas Park, and Nauck, which are home to a large population of uneducated, immigrant, apartment-based residents.

To address the needs of low- and moderate-income Hispanics, Asians, and African-Americans who live in the region, George Mason University will establish the Urban Alternative New Directions project to enable individuals and families to assert greater influence over their lives and the life of their community. Through the project, the Urban Alternative will address the need for more affordable housing and home ownership; greater community participation in neighborhood affairs; greater development of neighborhood leaders; and more educational opportunities using technology.

Partners in this initiative include the Arlington Community Foundation, Arlington Public Schools, Arlington County, Columbia Heights West Civic Association, Arlington New Directions Coalition, Virginia Housing Development Authority, Arlington Mill Community Center, Fresh Beginnings, Inc., Parent Education Advocacy Training Center, Fulaa Lifeline, Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, Buyers and Renters of Arlington's Voice (BRAVO), League of United Latin American Citizens Council (LULAC), New Century College, To Bridge and Build, Arlington Home Ownership Made Easy (AHOME), Tenants and Workers Support Committee (TWSC), and the University's Urban/Suburban Studies Program.
