| Georgia Institute of Technology, in partnership with Georgia State University, will receive a Community Outreach Partnership Centers New Directions Grant of $150,000 to work with its community partners in the Mechanicsville neighborhood. Together with the Community Design Center of Atlanta and three community-based organizations, SUMMECH (the Mechanicsville Community Development Corporation), the Mechanicsville Civic Association, and the McDaniel Glen Residents Associations, they will implement a broad array of activities.
Among the activities to be undertaken are: - Building the capacity of these three community-based organizations through active engagement in redevelopment projects.
- Implementing community/resident-based crime prevention programs, including a neighborhood watch program.
- Creating programs and actions to retain existing residents in the face of gentrification.
- Disseminating video histories of the neighborhood.
- Fostering new commercial development in the area.
The overall goal of the project is to increase the capacity of the community to address problems confronting it.
