| Georgia State University, in partnership with Georgia Institute of Technology, will implement a research and outreach program in four Atlanta clusters of neighborhoods which are part of the City's Empowerment Zone. These neighborhoods, with a total population of over 140,000, have a poverty rate one and one-half times that of the City and an unemployment rate twice that of the City.
Activities to be undertaken include: assisting a newly formed public housing residents association develop and implement action plans; helping the communities implementing community policing approaches; providing peer-to-peer training for new members of community development corporations; expanding a pilot reading program at one elementary school and starting it at another; and having faculty, students, and alumni provide technical assistance to small businesses in the target area.
The schools will be working on the program with the Community Design Center of Atlanta, an organization long active in providing assistance to Atlanta's community-based organizations.
