Overview
Howard University in Washington, D.C., along with its partners, will use its $550,000 Historically Black Colleges and Universities grant to undertake five activities and help address some of the most urgent problems in these communities. The activities will expand the university’s role in the community by adding a community-based, university-owned facility that will house the proposed community learning and training, stabilize/restore a historical landmark, create a cultural center and museum, increase accessibility to social services at a community facility, and create a children’s playground at a neighborhood park. The target area includes five distressed communities around the Howard University main campus. This area suffers from vacant properties, lack of access to social services, low employment, lagging economic development, lack of green space and training, and skills deficits.
