Overview
Howard University intends to use its Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) grant to conduct three activities. First, it will support the community-based planning and implementation process for the revitalization of the Deanwood neighborhood in Ward 7 of the District of Columbia in partnership with the Marshall Heights Community Development Organization (MHCDO) and other members of the Deanwood Collaborative. Second, it will join with Shaw Main Street to install local history markers in 13 abandoned police and fire call boxes as part of a cultural tourism initiative to strengthen business development plan in the neighborhood, and help design tours aimed at sparking further economic development of this distressed area. Third, it will help expand the Neighborhood Networks Center at Garfield Terrace by adding a social work team to provide case management for public housing residents to bolster self-sufficiency; it will also add additional supportive services in the form of workforce and job development, business counseling and training, fair housing and homeownership training, and health promotion.
