Overview
Howard University intends to use its Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Category II grant to conduct six activities that will extend its role in the community development process in the District of Columbia and New Orleans. They will provide a subsidy to support the early stages of construction of a 12-unit affordable condominium project in Northwest D.C. Second, Howard will support a residential façade rehabilitation program in the Deanwood/Burrville neighborhoods in Ward 7 in Northeast Washington. The university will help establish a micro-loan program for businesses in Shaw to ensure that existing business improvements and new business startups serving longstanding low- and moderate-income residents are part of the mix of retail development beginning to emerge in this changing neighborhood. Howard will remodel a community learning center on Florida Avenue to create a single large classroom suitable for enlarged community classes. They will also extend the scope of the work of the Mary Church Terrell home in LeDroit Park to house a community center and museum. In New Orleans, Howard will extend a pilot training program currently implemented under their Universities Rebuilding America Partnerships (URAP) grant to the Upper and Lower Ninth Wards.
