Overview
Indianapolis University-Purdue University Indianapolis will receive $395,088 to establish a Community Outreach Partnership Center in three Indianapolis neighborhoods -- Stringtown, Haughville, and Hawthorne. The COPC will be used to sustain constructive discourse between groups that previously had a mixed relationship. It will also attempt to solve the real problems confronting the people in these neighborhoods through outreach and applied research projects.

Specific activities to be undertaken include:

1. Providing the umbrella neighborhood organization, the Westside Cooperative Organization, with fiscal and organizational training and scholarships for neighborhood association members to attend a five-day fund-raising course.

2. Helping develop an economic development plan for the neighborhoods.

3. Producing a small business development strategy for the area and offering individualized training services to neighborhood entrepreneurs.

4. Reestablishing neighborhood schools and developing tutoring, civics, and service learning programs for neighborhood children.

Matching funds totalling more than $450,000 will be provided to the project, much of it from the university's partners, demonstrating their commitment to creating an enduring partnership.
