Abstract:

The purpose of the study was to explore the perspective of the landlord on the issue of housing released criminal offenders. Prior research generally has focused on the barriers the offender faces in trying to find employment, housing, and life stability; problems of homelessness; or in community programs that offer assistance in locating available housing. While housing is often cited as a hurdle to successful reentry, little research identified the actual boundaries of this hurdle. This study surveyed landlords in the City of Akron, Ohio, regarding their priorities in screening applicants and their history and attitudes towards housing released offenders. While it is only a preliminary survey of the area, its results show the need for future research.
